Georgina Farms
Camera-assisted spraying has streamlined our operations
At Georgina Farms in Walkaway, Northern Western Australia, Gareth Rowe has cultivated his passion for farming for over 30 years. Managing 6.000 hectares of primarily wheat and canola, Gareth’s farming journey began in the late 1990s with a clear ambition: to become a dedicated, full-time grower. After years of searching, he acquired Georgina Farms and began a lifelong commitment to sustainable, forward-thinking agriculture.
Innovative solutions for a tough climate
Farming on the dry margins of the wheat belt, Gareth faces unique challenges, particularly when it comes to weed pressures like ryegrass and radish, combined with marginal rainfall. To address these challenges, he’s adopted innovative technologies, including Agrifac’s in-house developed AiCPlus camera spot spraying system.
This transition to camera-assisted spraying was motivated by a strong desire to reduce chemical inputs and improve sustainability. Recognizing that chemicals and fertilizers represent a major portion of operating costs, Gareth sought smarter solutions. By implementing green-on-green spot spraying, he has already seen impressive reductions in herbicide usage, ranging from 5% to 22% compared to conventional broadcast spraying.
Broader benefits
Beyond the clear cost savings, Gareth emphasizes the broader agronomic benefits made possible through reduced chemical inputs with his Agrifac Endurance 2. Spot spraying not only cuts herbicide use but also helps reduce the risk of product resistance and promotes overall plant health. Looking to the future, Gareth envisions a time when data analytics and artificial intelligence transform weed management and crop nutrition, providing insights that were once unimaginable.
At Georgina Farms, the implementation of AiCPlus has significantly streamlined operations. The sprayer now automatically adjusts nozzles based on real-time camera data, giving Gareth greater control and productivity. The autonomy and reliability of the Agrifac system also reduce downtime and labor needs, keeping operations running smoothly across their 6.000 hectares.
Looking ahead
Gareth sees tremendous potential in the evolution of data-driven farming. As technology continues to reshape agriculture, he remains committed to leading by example, adopting sustainable practices that not only protect his crops but also safeguard the environment. “For me, it’s about farming responsibly and ensuring this land is in better shape for the next generation.” Gareth says.
